My nude paintings focus on the ever reoccurring problem of depicting mere existence, that’s what I endeavor to represent in the dramatic or idyllic situations I set up in the studio or in a landscape, filled with theatrical, exalted gestures. For these representations I reach back to selected traditions of Cagnacci, Velázquez, Renoir, Vallotton, Bonnard, Ferenczy, Csernus and Konkoly, whose works inspired me to capture essential human situations, just like these great predecessors did.
„Also with title ’The Bathing Girls’ I refer to the paintings of Renoir. These charming lovely girls appear to be absolutely natural and spontaneous sitting in the lake. Their nudity comes natural, spreading the wholesome atmosphere of Arcadia. „Unlike the models of Rubens, their skin never shows clothlike creases or wrinkles, but fits as perfect and tight as the fur of animals.” (Kenneth Clark) The figures are part of this ideal world, but at the same time using the illusionistic possibilities of painting, I intended to isolate them from nature in a statuesque manner.
“To my mind, a picture should be something pleasant, cheerful, and pretty, yes pretty! There are too many unpleasant things in life as it is without creating still more of them.” (Pierre-Auguste Renoir)
